There hasn't been a British production of Hannah Cowley's play of 1780 in well over a century. On the strength of Jessica Swale's polished revival, this feels like a genuinely puzzling omission. The play more than stands up on its own and offers a fascinating insight into what it was to be a woman at the time when Cowley was writing. In the world of the play, widows wield considerable influence and young women of fire and wit are to be celebrated, while overbearing husbands are not to be tolerated...
