There is, of course, nothing new to the current fashion for immersive theatre or reconfiguring conventional theatrical spaces - when Stephen Daldry revived Arnold Wesker's 1959 play The Kitchen at the Royal Court (that he had just taken over as artistic director at) in 1994, he anticipated both trends, utterly transforming the theatre into the busy, gleaming kitchen of a restaurant and thrusting the audience into the heart of it. You could virtually smell the cooking, even if (as specified by the author), there was no actual food being prepared, merely mimed versions of it...
