How nice to be able to record a significant success for ENO in a classic work. Deborah Warner's staging of Tchaikovsky's most popular opera is broadly traditional, and much of it looks extremely handsome. The opening tableau of the third act, where the St Petersburg ballroom is invaded by guests dancing a polonaise, even gets a spontaneous round of applause...
