The message of 42nd Street is that 'the show must go on'. Life imitated art on the opening night when the leading lady, Daisy Maywood, was taken ill shortly before curtain up and Lucinda Lawrence, her cover, took over as Peggy Sawyer - the small town girl who makes it out of the chorus line. The almost delicious irony of that was not lost on the audience, who gave her spirited performance a very warm endorsement...
