Blackwood clashes with the Duchess's formidable layer, Maitre Suzanne Blum, who refuses her access to her client and won't answer Blackwood's questions. As a result Blackwood becomes increasingly fascinated with Blum herself, with the hold she has over the Duchess - she starts to suspect her of stealing her jewels, and worse, keeping her a prisoner in her own home...
