Told by an Idiot and poet Carol Ann Duffy have sought to create an alternative history of the colourful rogue's life, swapping gender, as director Paul Hunter says, "to see what happens". The sad answer is, not much. The production bears the stamp of Told by an Idiot's distinctive style - heightened theatricality and bold physicality - along with Duffy's literary flair, but at its heart it lacks the driving force necessary to sustain interest... This Casanova is a woman but please don't think of Moll Flanders or Fanny Hill. She is alert to the attractions of the opposite sex and she beds them just as a man would bed a woman. Her libido and sexual knowledge are universally admired... September 13, 2007
