Sweden’s outstanding dress designer, Mago, who designed the clothes for more than a dozen films and a handful stage productions of Ingmar Bergman, passed away on April 4 at the age of 83.
Mago was born in Berlin in 1925 as Max Goldstein, the son of a Jewish paediatrician. He came to Sweden shortly after Kristallnacht in November 1938.
Perhaps Mago’s best known work internationally was for his close friend, Marlene Dietrich, in Just a Gigolo, her last film in 1979.
Mago, a legend in Sweden’s theatre and entertainment world, designed the costumes for some 125 plays, and numerous variety shows and operettas. Mago said frequently that he could not sew in a button and he manifested his appreciation of dressmakers by establishing a foundation that acknowledges their skills with an annual award.
