Support for members

Published Thursday 2 February 2012 at 17:25

It is brilliant that you’ve written such a great article about Equity’s recent survey (The Stage, January 26, page 1). This survey came about because of the work of Equity’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Committee, composed of ordinary Equity members like myself. In other words, a grass-roots initiative wonderfully supported by the union.

I am keen to make clear, however, that the survey is part of a process to support those Equity members who themselves choose to be ‘out’ in the workplace, not to encourage members to ‘out’ themselves. It is most emphatically not part of an outing campaign. On the contrary, Equity is making it quite clear that it takes a zero tolerance approach to homophobia in the workplace. It is the duty of employers and co-workers to proactively create a safe and non-judgemental environment in which all the union’s members may flourish and deliver their best possible work.

Thank you The Stage and Equity for supporting this initiative.
