I was somewhat surprised to find that the gallery seats at the Palace Theatre for The Woman in White are priced at £22.50. Anthony Field (Forum, May 13, page 9) highlighted the fact that with a top price of £50 for a stalls seat and various prices for the circle and the upper circle, a gallery seat should be on offer at 10% of the top price, say £5.
At my local theatre in Norwich, the bottom price is always related to a packet of cigarettes, the hire of a video, a cinema ticket or a couple of drinks. Thus I can currently see Cats for £4.50, Glyndebourne on tour for £5 and the pantomime for £3.50. This is not a discounted ticket and they do not offer these “subject to availability” for UB40’s and students alone. The Theatre Royal sells 5% of the house at a face value bottom price and more than 20,000 seats are sold each year at an average price of £4. No wonder it is one of the most successful theatres in the country.
