Continuing to Jermyn-ate

Published Monday 8 March 2010 at 17:55

I am writing to reassure theatregoers that Jermyn Street Theatre is not closing.

A recent article in The Guardian online correctly reported the development by the Crown Estate and included many businesses on Jermyn Street that have now closed, due to reopen in 2012. In the article, reminiscing about the wonderful hotel and gentlemen’s perfumery shop, Jermyn Street Theatre was listed as one of the fated few. This is an error, as the theatre does not come under the Crown Estate’s development plans. We sit neatly next door to the block that is about to be razed to the ground.

Yes, we may be under a bit of tarpaulin and there could be the odd skip in the street, but rest assured that, when you enter the inner sanctum of the theatre, you will be received with a cheery smile, a warm welcome and a great show. Even now the telephone lines are jammed in anticipation of Anyone Can Whistle, in celebration of Stephen Sondheim’s 80th birthday.

I imagine that as the works proceed there will be daily disruption on the street. We will soldier on, daily readying the theatre for your arrival each evening, so do please keep checking our website listings and enjoy the quality productions we have planned for you over the next two years, as the development moves on.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those concerned patrons who have called the theatre, emailed and even popped their heads around the door to ask why we are closing. We are here to stay and look forward to receiving more fantastic productions.

So to all out there looking for something special, do come down to Jermyn Street, as the show and the theatre will definitely go on.
