I could not agree more with Ted Bottle (Stage Talk, November 5, page 8). The disappearance of the theatre house curtain in many productions nowadays is to be deplored. At Bill Kenwright’s excellent production of Spider’s Web in the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin, one was actually surprised to see the theatre house curtain in situ before the play commenced.
People wishing to see fully costumed productions of Gilbert and Sullivan in Dublin these days have to be content to go to a concert hall rather than a theatre. Ironic, considering these works were created for theatre with proscenium arch and house tabs, not for concert halls.
