Honouring Stephen

I appreciate that you probably do not do reviews or mention memorial tributes as a rule, but I felt that the Stephen Gately’s memorial celebration held at the Palace Theatre Shaftsbury Avenue was worthy of a mention.

The performances of everyone involved ensured that Stephen’s memory will be remembered in what he did best. A true performer, and a pure showman and all the artists involved ensured they gave their best in honour of a pal and friend. They played the crowd but they also played for Stephen. At times the audience sat and held the tears back but the atmosphere was soon lightened by upbeat messages from distinguished showbiz personalities, not forgetting actor Christopher Biggins - who performed with Stephen in the theatre and who hosted the evening event. Shayne Ward sang the Josh Groban track To Where You Are. Other performers included former Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon, Boyzone and closing act Beverley Knight, ensuring it was a night that will live on in us all.

Celebrity guests included TV host Lisa Snowdon and Blue singer Duncan James among many others. Sir Ian McKellen periodically recited selected poetry at poignant moments throughout the evening. The event, organised by Stephen’s civil partner Andrew Cowles, was so special that by the time the theatre cleared, Andrew had made sure Stephen’s short but well-filled life would continue in us all. Stephen was an angel on earth and his voice is now an angel in heaven - that we can certainly be sure of.
