Office politics

It is surely of great concern to the whole arts, entertainment and cultural world, both nationally and internationally, that the appointment of the chairman of the arts council should in any way become a political issue.

Since 1946, the council’s Royal Charter has guaranteed its independence from government as one of the great hopes for the future of all our creative arts. The chairman should surely be a person respected by the whole arts world, as was Sir Kenneth Clark, who was chairman when I was appointed as an officer in 1957.

No one should be allowed to be part of any of the arts council’s work without reading at least the first ten annual reports of the Arts Council of Great Britain. Life might have to be lived forwards, but can only be understood backwards. Anyone wanting to interfere with appointments to the council should read these and weep as to what has been happening recently.
