My comments in context

Published Tuesday 23 June 2009 at 12:30

I am writing following the article by Lalayn Baluch in your newspaper (June 18, page 4), reporting on the Theatres Trust conference.

I want to make it clear that my comments have been taken out of context. I spoke about the need, in my opinion, for us to stop spending money on new theatres and arts centres, whilst continuing to develop creative ways to invest in the renovation of our many wonderful historic theatres. I said that I was fed up with consultants and architects getting paid six figure sums. As an industry we should be working with the government to find innovative tax solutions, to support the investment and reinvestment into existing theatres. I suggested that the West End badly needed additional funding to support the maintenance and development of these buildings. I mentioned a number of concerns including toilet facilities, air conditioning and poorly maintained seating. Most specifically I highlighted the pressing need for us as an industry to secure further support and investment in order to open up our theatres to more people, for example, with afternoon play readings, exhibitions, comfortable bar and restaurant facilities and of course Sunday performances.

I am frustrated that my passionate comments about the need for further investment in the regional UK, and London commercial spaces have been reported in such an imbalanced way.

I remain totally dedicated to the further growth and development of the theatre industry through collaboration, investment, passionate hard work and creativity.

I look forward to The Stage newspaper focusing the spotlight on these important issues, challenges and opportunities.
