Dear friend

Published Tuesday 2 December 2008 at 11:45

With reference to Patrick Newley’s obituary for Ann (Tracy) Rogers (page 53, November 6) I would like to say a few words about her. We were contemporaries at the Italia Conti School (1959-60) and when she sang in class, she was magic. I always felt that she was destined for stardom. She was the most enchanting Cinderella imaginable at the New Theatre, Oxford in 1964 (with Des O’Connor as Buttons, and Danny La Rue and Alan Haynes as the Ugly Sisters).

When she appeared on Sunday night at the London Palladium, I stood in the snow in front of a TV shop window in South Wales to watch her sing, but of course, I couldn’t hear her. I was on tour with a children’s theatre company at the time.

I loved her dearly and I have her last Bird of Peace Christmas card she sent me on my mantelpiece still.
