I see that Harry Venning, in his write-up of Little Dorrit, is propagating that ancient theatrical myth that it’s more fun to play evil characters then good ones.
What nonsense. Yes, of course it’s fun to play villains and villainesses, but it’s just as enjoyable to play heroes and heroines. Good characters are just as strong (often stronger) than bad ones.
I can’t help thinking that this fashionable equating of good with dullness and evil with excitement is responsible for the culture of drink, drugs and general bad behvaiour that we find around us today.
