I read your article by Tabard about The Show Must Go On (The Stage, July 17, p9) and found it completely unfair. I was a part of this production (I did the posters and print advertising) and was very proud of this job. Your article makes it out as though the show never went on, when in fact it did four cities around the UK.
Victoria Hammond and the cast of The Show Must Go On
Kind of odd that a paper dedicated to helping the theatre industry would so happily publish an article about an amateur show that didn’t make it because of its title and then insert a picture of the actors so clearly performing on stage. I also think to name a specific actress is rather unfair as well.
The fault lies with the amount of pre-planning on the part of the directors and producers to inform the public of the show. Basically, not enough advertising.
The Show Must Go On did star Zoe Tyler, but she was only one member of a cast of more than 30, and she always said that. Otherwise it would have been called A Night with Zoe Tyler.
Not everyone involved with theatre in this country is a West End star, some actually do it because they enjoy it and yes, often shows don’t make it. But perhaps you ought to find out why a show is ending first, rather than blame it on the title.
