Save the children not time

Published Tuesday 8 July 2008 at 10:15

I should like to clarify certain points following a recent article in The Stage headed Artistic licence (Insight, page 6, June 26).

You claim that Richmond is one of the authorities where licensing for child performers is regarded as a low priority and that we make the process “slow and bureaucratic”.

This is simply not the case.

Our Education Welfare Service aims to work flexibly by processing licence applications within a seven day notice period, which is considerably shorter than the 21 day notice requirement under the Children and Young Persons Act. It is not possible to process a licence within a shorter period and rarely within 24 hours, as time is needed to follow up any enquiries and necessary checks.

These checks are, of course, vitally important to ensure that children and young people are safeguarded. This is our paramount consideration.
