“Negotiation not confrontation” has for many years been an approach which has served Equity well when reaching new agreements with management. Equity President Harry Landis, in making his comments about Bill Kenwright, was expressing a shared sense of frustration among our members who work in the West End, as negotiations have been ongoing for more than 12 months without a resolution. For far too long our members’ minimum wage has lagged behind what anyone reasonable person would accept as a fair living wage compensation for the demanding work they undertake.

What has saddened me was the very personal attack launched by Julius Green against Harry. The latter’s remarks were directed at a business attitude whereas Julius’ remarks targeted Harry’s professional skills as a performer. Such an attitude is not conducive to ensuring “negotiation not confrontation” is the paramount driving force.
I hope that some diplomacy will ensue and the Society of London Theatre will make a reasonable offer within the context of the current SOLT/Equity negotiations.
