Have your say

Published Tuesday 13 May 2008 at 12:25

The Stage jumped the gun when it reported that the ballot for the Equity Council and president will offer the option of voting online. We had online voting in last year’s committee elections, but current legislation forces Equity and all other unions to conduct ballots for their council and president on paper only. We are optimistic that the government will change this restriction before long.

However, with ballot papers completely redesigned, it will be easier than ever this year for members to cast their votes. And I am happy to report that there is unprecedented interest in these elections - the number of candidates is up by almost 25% and in the General List there is an astonishing 50 candidates for just 17 seats.

It is going to be a hard-fought election. Equity has never been in better shape and members should watch out for their ballot papers in the first week of June to make sure they get their say in the future of their union.
