Save the Redgrave

Published Tuesday 13 May 2008 at 12:20

The Redgrave Theatre, Farnham, is about to be demolished. The planning application to bulldoze this listed building is already with Waverley Borough Council. The local campaign to save this theatre has been relentless and intense over a period of many years, but still the Philistine army of officers and councillors and developers marches on regardless.

I am always at a loss to understand why news of this cultural vandalism has not hit the national press more forcibly. Where are all our young actors going to learn their craft without theatres like the Redgrave to give them their wings?

Where are all our famous actors - many of whom have played the Redgrave in their youth - that they are not up in arms about this?

A few famous actors have spoken up, but not anything like enough. Maybe the rest are not even aware that this is happening.

I urge the acting profession to unite and do something before it is too late. A pizza house or a theatre - that is the question!
