Lansbury memories

Published Monday 28 April 2008 at 18:05

I always enjoy reading Patrick Newley’s articles in The Stage and am amazed at how many fascinating tales he has recounted - long may they continue.

Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury

I was interested to read about the upcoming Jerry Herman Palladium concert (April 10, page 52) and it will be great so see the wonderful Angela Lansbury. Patrick says that she hasn’t graced the London stage for 36 years, so I assume he is referring to Gypsy at the Piccadilly Theatre which opened on May 29, 1973, with Miss Lansbury playing the role for most of the 300 performances until she was succeeded by Dolores Gray.

However, I seem to remember attending a gala at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the late eighties when Lansbury and Beatrice Arthur performed Bosom Buddies from Mame as a surprise finale. Can any other readers confirm this, or am I having a ‘senior moment’?
