I note that the Writers Guild’s AGM is coming up shortly on June 4 and I have a few points for the benefit of its members.
Isn’t it time that the guild’s annual reports were sent to members before the cut off time for motions? The membership might wish to forward a motion relevant to items in the report. Does the executive wish to discourage debate and change for the better in a democratic way?
Motions are the only way the grassroots can run their guild, not simply be managed by an executive made up of an oligarchy of uncontested chums (though legally democratic).
Isn’t it time the apathetic membership woke up and proposed a motion for a cut-off date for the sending of the reports since the rules already put a deadline on the sending of motions?
Isn’t it time the guild issued its members with a copy of Citrine’s ABC of Chairmanship, as the rule book refers to it?
Isn’t it time the members asked the executive if they actually have a policy regarding their relationship to the TUC and its AGM? The guild is affiliated but does the general secretary attend these days? And what is the guild’s policy to anti-trade union legislation?
