Derby damage

Published Tuesday 22 April 2008 at 10:35

It is, indeed, very sad to see the destruction of Derby Hippodrome. What a proud theatre this used to be.

Let’s hope that it comes as a wake up call to reverse the damage done, so that the town’s historic grade II-listed theatre can at last return to its proper use as the wonderful hall of entertainment it was designed to be.

When we were preparing our book Old Theatres of the Midlands, we were so lucky to have photographs of the building taken in the sixties, and, as we went to press, we learned that there had been a fire within the building. What has occurred since, would certainly make a book in itself.

Derby Hippodrome has a huge body of theatrical supporters in the town and district, who were hoping to stage shows there, and who are very anxious to know what the outcome of this unfortunate chapter of events will be. Let’s hope that common sense will prevail.
