Wealth of support

Published Monday 31 March 2008 at 10:45

I am, purely and simply, a punter of very modest means, who struggles to muster a few pounds to see and hear music and drama in my area. It has long been my intention to support one or two of those organisations by becoming a ‘friend’.

Firstly I joined my music college - an internationally renowned conservatoire - for the ridiculously low cost of £20 per year.

Imagine my surprise when I checked with two local theatres - one a suburban rep and the other a regional one, but neither in the same league as The National or RSC, when the least I was asked to stump up was £500 and £760 per year respectively. Admittedly that included some free tickets but that is hardly the point. I simply cannot attend every production.

Needless to say I will not be taking up either of the offers.

Is this good business practice, or is it a question of, “we want your support but only if you are rich, irrespective of whether one enjoys the arts”.
