Case in point

Published Tuesday 4 December 2007 at 11:10

I am an actor in London, and proud Equity member, who would like to thank the union’s legal department after they have helped me win a case of money owed to me by an agent who not only withheld payment for a job I did for over a year, but also made deductions from my pay.

I suspect that Equity actually did spend more on legal fees to help me win this case than the actual amount I was eventually awarded, and because it was done via the small claims court, the union cannot sue the agent for those fees.

Whilst I am most grateful to Equity, I want some more good to come out of it. I would like to send a message to agents in the industry that Equity will protect its members against this kind of exploitation - and also help make other young and new actors aware of their rights.
