I should like to respond to the lengthy and eloquent letter from Julian Boast (Letters, September 13, page 8)
Theatre Royal, Brighton Photo: Susan Hailes
We are all aware that refurbishment of the Theatre Royal in Brighton is necessary. Mr Boast does not address whether patrons can see a show if they do not pay the £1 levy.
The extra money collected in this manner is raised by the public at the time of purchasing a ticket and therefore not coming out of Ambassador Theatre Group profits. When and if the theatre is sold, Ambassador will be able to sell a fully refurbished theatre at a very handsome profit, aided by money squeezed out of the public.
If the money for the restoration had been paid on a voluntary basis, the public would have responded very favourably and with less animosity. It is obvious that this money-raising scheme has been dreamed up accountants and not people with any knowledge of the theatre.
