Free publicity?

Published Tuesday 7 August 2007 at 11:05

It is obviously good news for the financial fitness of West End theatres that Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is reported as taking an advance of £10 million at the box office. However, one also hopes that the BBC and commercial television companies are sharing some of the profits from large scale musicals which have been given prime time hours on Saturday nights, for what is really an advertising gimmick. No doubt such musicals as The Lord of the Rings, The Drowsy Chaperone and Wicked would not have to pay thousands of pounds for advertisements had they also been given such coverage.
