Absurd law

Published Tuesday 10 July 2007 at 11:10

Andrew Pryce’s letter (June 28, page 8), highlights the madness of legislation. Some years ago, when I lived in Richmond, Surrey, and was involved with amateur open air Shakespeare productions, we had the anomalous situation whereby we employed a couple of marginally underage boys. These boys were able to go to school on their own, go to the cinema on their own, cycle to rehearsal on their own, but the moment they arrived at the rehearsal venue (where they were under far less threat than on their way there) they were legally required to be chaperoned. This struck us as a classic example of the law being an ass!
