Legal tussle

Published Tuesday 3 July 2007 at 11:35

While we have some sympathy with Stagecoach’s frustration with the regulations relating to children in performances, NODA and the Little Theatre Guild are concerned about their demand for new legislation, as we fear this would inevitably mean the loss of the hard-won exemptions for amateur theatre groups contained in the 1963 Children & Young Person’s Act.

Instead, we support the need for a cross-industry code of conduct and we are disappointed that Stagecoach should have chosen to withdraw from the excellent work being carried out by the National Network for Children in Employment & Entertainment (NNCEE). This body brings together local education authorities, agents, broadcasters and professional and amateur theatre, and is currently working on developing a code of conduct to encourage uniformity of practice across all the local authorities.
