Getting priorities right

Published Monday 23 April 2007 at 12:30

I was amazed when reading on your front page of the proposed demands Equity are making on increases of salary for the West End.

Rises are in order, as the last one was in 2002, but surely Equity should do something about three television programmes now in session. We had the forerunner with How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? and The Sound of Music. Now we have voting on amateurs for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the West End, Grease following, and last week a new casting was announced as being held at the American Church, Tottenham Court Road, London, for yet another coming production.

If this goes on, many professional actors will be forced to seek employment in other trades, as any Tom, Dick or Harry will be gracing the West End stage.

I think Equity should cure this disease and cheap television before it gets out of hand, and then propose and discuss increases.
