Cruel ridicule

Published Monday 16 April 2007 at 15:35

There can be few more embarrassing programmes on television at present than the auditions to find leads for Joseph and Grease. It is clear that the majority of those appearing on television haven’t a hope in Hades of ever becoming proficient, let alone star, performers.

To subject them to public humiliation is a sorry spectacle. To see them unable to accept rejection but still proclaiming “I know I’ve got what it takes” is sad for both them and viewers.

These programmes may make cheap television but poor entertainment. Auditions should take place away from the public gaze.
