While I am rarely moved to disappointment, dismay and anger, all at the same time, Jeremy Austin’s article (November 9, page 6) has succeeded in doing this.
As the former Stage news editor, those reading his article, which deals with Equity, will naturally believe it adheres to the long-standing tradition of The Stage reporting facts objectively and fairly. I accept that features from guest writers may not fall within this remit but nothing in Jeremy’s article suggests otherwise. The article was a biased, less-than-truthful representation of the facts, which results in opinions being published, which under close and fair examination could not be sustained. Maybe the tabloid format of The Stage means that editorially, it is now trying to emulate the mainstream press. Presumably we can look forward to The Stage featuring headlines of words with one syllable, Page 3 Girls, free gifts and lucky dip cards. Even President George W Bush would have problems justifying the opinions expressed by Jeremy, apparently based on only one interview but then again, it would make a good basis for a comedy script.
