Having just read Lincoln Hudson’s letter (Stage Talk, September 14, Page 8) in response to a letter I posted the week before, I thought I would respond to explain myself further. I understand that there was some ambiguity within the letter that may have been the source of Mr Hudson’s response. The problem seemed to arise over my comment that “Lloyd Webber has made more money than the rest of us, therefore he must be doing something right” but how it has been received could not be further away from my intentions.
I did previously state that he was doing something that he loved, which is probably more important to him than the money. McDonalds and the tobacco companies, as is my understanding, make money from providing something that is harming people. When was the last time someone died from watching Evita? Comparing theatre to fast food restaurants or tobacco companies is a gross manipulation and by saying that actors on the West End do it purely for the money is a monstrous over generalisation.
