Bluntly put, I am sick to the bone with people slating Andrew Lloyd Webber and his latest venture to discover a star. It seems to be the people with a calcification of beliefs, claiming that theatre is a “closed profession”.

Lloyd Webber has amassed his fortune from doing something that he loves, which at the end of the day, is what theatre is meant to be about. He is giving people a chance, who may not have the money, bravery or belief to follow such an opportunity. As an aspiring actor/musician myself, I certainly fit into the category of not having the money to afford formal training - therefore I take my hat off to someone who is fighting for the down trodden. He has earned his reputation fairly and provided a platform for so many aspiring talents.
In response to Stephanie Colburns’ letter (Stage Talk, August 24, page 8) he has clearly made a lot more money than most of us, so he must be doing something right. Therefore is it not then fair to say that this could be another triumph to add to his success list?
In conclusion, please remember theatre is not a closed profession and no matter who you are, it is to be enjoyed and nurtured into something through which we can change the world.
