Stage readers might be a little confused by John West’s comments in last week’s Stage Talk (May 4, 2006) about his own plans for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford. While we’re aware of plans he’s submitted to the local council in Stratford, they haven’t been developed with the RSC. Michael Boyd never asked Mr West to develop plans for the theatre, nor did Mr West apply to the open advertisements to be considered as either architect or theatre consultant to the project.
We’ll be launching the outline designs for our project in June - plans which are being developed in consultation with agencies like English Heritage and the Theatres Trust, but also with theatre practitioners (from the RSC and beyond), our audiences and local people. Surely the ambition of any new theatre is to create a space that isn’t designed in isolation and that meets the expectations of audiences, artists and the public. I hope our outline plan for Stratford does this but also demonstrates a scale and ambition that will leave a lasting legacy.

Executive Director, Royal Shakespeare Company
