Flattered as I was to find you giving so much space to the session I did at the Edinburgh TV festival (Broadcasting, September 15, page 16), I really must correct one of the remarks that I’m misquoted as saying.
At no point during the discussion did I criticise Paul Abbott or any other writer for not writing every episode of the series they originate. As someone who spends a lot of time stressing the importance of original drama, it is hardly likely I would criticise one of its greatest exponents. Paul Abbott is a marvellous writer who has every right to create a series and then let other writers contribute episodes. In fact, of course it is essential, because it is the only way these series can have a long life.
In the battle to get more original drama on to our television screens it is important that we do not get sidetracked by imaginary differences between writers.
