Snooker is a frighteningly addictive game to watch, considering it is actually quite a dull concept, so tickets for the various world championships that are held at the Crucible in Sheffield are obviously in short supply.
Even so, you would think that if you were one of the leading actors of your generation, part of an impressive acting dynasty and, frankly, artistic director of the venue, you would have a good chance of getting in. Step forward Sam West. Or rather, don’t.
It seems West, who took the top job at the impressive producing house late last year, was trying to get into the auditorium just as a frame had kicked off (do frames kick off?). Just like at a play, however, once proceedings have started, latecomers are not allowed in until there is a lull. So the artistic director found himself in the embarrassing position of not being let in to the auditorium of his own theatre.
What was worse, possibly, was that the match in question featured Mark Williams scoring the only maximum break of the tournament. That was supposed to sound a bit more impressive than it actually does. It would never have happened to Michael Grandage.
