Brawling beyond the barricades

Of course, had the events been unfolding in Southwark in London, one could have been forgiven for thinking that the brawlers were actually Sir Trevor Nunn, who is currently directing at south London venue the Menier Chocolate Factory, and Sir Cameron Mackintosh.

A very unseemly spat has erupted between the pair over Mackintosh’s 25th anniversary production of Les Miserables.

Sir Trev, it seems, is upset that he wasn’t invited to be involved.

“It is not a new production,” he fumed to The Daily Telegraph. “It is a variant production that owes everything that’s good about it to the original production. And everything that’s not so good about it, and is uncomfortable about it, is the work of a group of assistants. Do you gather that there is some unhappiness here?”

Mackintosh’s riposte?

He is “saddened by Nunn’s inaccurate and ungracious remarks”. Ouch.
