Theatrically challenged

With the Tories’ focus on cultural education, Vaizey may also be disappointed to learn of the results of a recent survey at Shakespeare’s Globe into children’s access to theatre.

According to the results of the Globe’s survey of more than 1,200 13 and 14-year olds, while almost all (99.4%) have been to the cinema, one in three (36.6%) has never been to the theatre, while four out of five (82.5%) have never seen a Shakespeare play.

Although with the news this week that Double Falsehood - a little known 18th century play by Lewis Theobald - appears to have been based on a lost Shakespeare work called Cardenio, Tabard supposes it’s just about possible that that last figure could be a little off.

We’re guessing that nobody asked the kids how many of them had seen the work of Lewis Theobald…
