Fancy yourself as something of a fool?
Well, Tabard has good news for you - Muncaster Castle in the Lake District is launching its annual competition to find a new jester. The castle was the home of the original Tom Fool and is believed to be the only castle in Europe to appoint a modern-day jester.
The International Jester Tournament is the centrepiece of the Castle’s annual Festival of Fools that will run from May 30 to June 3.
The winning jester will receive a crate of Jennings Cumberland Ale every month for a year and will make a number of foolish appearances at the Castle in the course of their reign as Muncaster’s jester.
Last year’s winner Will Tease is compering this event. He said: “I’ve had a fun-packed year being Muncaster’s official jester. It’s a dream job to be able to act the Fool and get paid for it. The free beer was good too.
“I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who would love to be the official jester at the home of the original Tom Fool this year and follow in my footsteps.”
Anyone who wants to take part in the competition will need to be able to use their skills to keep a lively crowd thoroughly entertained for at least 15 minutes. According to organisers, they should apply in writing with details about their relevant skills and “any previous experience”, although bearing in mind it’s the only gig going for a modern-day jester that might be a little tricky…
