A rather grand gala event was held last weekend to celebrate the tenth anniversary of West End musical The Lion King. The matinee performance was attended by a strange mix of famous faces ranging from Cherie Blair to Gok Wan, the fashion chap, and even James Earl Jones - the voice of Mufasa in the film version - turned up.
The after party at London’s Buddha Bar saw the cast reunite to sing a few songs and director Julie Taymor take up the microphone to reminisce about the last decade and a bit. Her list of most memorable moments included rehearsing in a South African opera house which, under apartheid, had only welcomed white singers and - more amusingly - watching the show in the UK while sitting next to Prince Charles.
She said it gave the song I Just Can’t Wait to be King a whole new level of meaning. She didn’t reveal whether Charles was humming along.
