Chit Chat: Complaints when Judi speaks rudely

Published Tuesday 30 June 2009 at 10:40

Tabard was amused to read recent reports that “almost every time” Dame Judi Dench swears on film, the British Board of Film Classification receives complaints.

So ingrained into public consciousness is she for playing morally upright, respectful characters and being a ‘national treasure’ that we cannot bear the thought of her having a potty mouth.

One is tempted to wonder then whether The Daily Telegraph received any similar moans from the disgruntled masses when its theatre critic Charles Spencer recently reported a rather angry letter he has received from Dame Judi.

In it, she vented her frustration at a negative review Spencer had written of her performance in the West End production of Madame de Sade. “I’ve always rather admired you, but now I realise you’re an absolute shit,” she wrote.

Good heavens. Wash that mouth out with soap.
