Sir Ian McKellen, meanwhile, has - Tabard hears - taken time out of his own busy schedule to lend a hand in Equity’s negotiations for an improved deal in the West End.

Apparently, the actor - who is as well known for his appearance as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings films as for his luminous stage career - turned up to Equity’s final meeting with the Society of London Theatre in order to bring a little gravitas to proceedings.
McKellen’s own pay packet is not going to be affected by any changes to the West End minimum rate, but he was clearly keen to lend a hand to his fellow actors.
It’s good to see that it isn’t only in Middle Earth that he’s a friend to the little people.
