Chit chat - House of the rising sun

Tabard was pleased to see a rather interesting tie-up between the Royal Opera House and The Sun, of all publications, being announced this week.

No, before anyone gets too excited, the ROH isn’t offering up its prima donnas (and I mean that in its literal, not pejorative sense) as potential Page 3 lovelies. Alas, no.

In fact, through a partnership with the red top and with financial support from the Helen Hamlyn Trust, the company will be offering subsidised first-night tickets to readers of The Sun, meaning that construction workers and truck drivers from across the country will be able to get tickets to see Don Giovanni for £30 or less.

Regular opera-goers can expect their evening to be enlivened with erudite comments such as “look at the lungs on that”.

Although Tabard wouldn’t like to hazard a guess as to whether it will be meant in the literal or (some might say) pejorative sense.

Either way, the novice opera enthusiasts will do well to remember that it’s not over till the fat bird sings.
