Chit Chat - Direct ban

Published Tuesday 23 October 2007 at 12:45 by Tabard

Tabard has a mystery which we feel needs solving.

Anthony Nielson, picking up his gong at the Theatrical Management Association Awards for The Wonderful World of Dissocia, made a rather enigmatic reference to a falling out between himself and the Hampstead Theatre, where the event was being held.

Standing on stage with his glass octagon (that’s what the award looked like - “somewhere to hang your keys” quipped host Jackie Clune), Nielson told the audience: “It’s good to be back at the Hampstead Theatre. This is the first time I’ve been back since I was banned… I was the director [of a play at the theatre] and I wasn’t allowed back in to see the show.”

When pressed as to why he had been banned, Nielson insisted he couldn’t remember, adding “You’ll have to ask Jenny [Topper - then artistic director of Hampstead Theatre].”

So, Jenny, why did you ban him?

Or, indeed, if anyone else has any ideas, answers on a postcard to: Why would anyone possibly want to ban Anthony Nielson? He’s such a lovely, thoughtful and unassuming chap. c/o The Stage, Stage House, 47 Bermondsey Street, London SE1 3XT.
