Let’s just hope he doesn’t get the kind of reception which has been reserved for Menopause the Musical - the latest offering at the Shaw Theatre.
The new musical (well, it’s new to the UK), which “celebrates the change”, has been in for some really vitriolic responses - especially from the female critics.
Lyn Gardner gave it no stars and described it as a “Long, cold douche of the soul”, while Sam Marlowe complained, “The show is not just silly, it’s offensive. Its dubious notion of sisterhood is deeply patronising, its limited view of femininity sexist”.
The male critics, perhaps afraid of being accused of criticising something of which they know little, were kinder - with the exception of Dominic Cavendish.
“Menopause the Musical, the brainchild of Jeanie Linders, is so intellectually lightweight, it makes the average mag for teenage girls look like the collected works of Wittgenstein,” he warns us. “It’s garbage, and that’s me being chivalrous.”
Ouch. Oh well, every year there’s a show where the reviews prove to be more entertaining than the show itself. Tabard fears this might be this year’s.
