As a showbiz observer since 1990, I confirm the truth of impresarios Duggie Chapman and Nick Thomas’ statements (September 21, front page) that the Blackpool light entertainment industry has dropped 50% from previous years and is facing meltdown and crisis. Blackpool is now very much a cultural desert.
No more do the really big and famous want to visit artistically primitive Blackpool, which now only presents generally bawdy shows for the drunken stag and hen parties that now monopolise the resort. Amongst the strip and porno shows, theatre occasionally appears.
The Blackpool Grand Theatre is much to blame for such artistic decadance and the big producers’ boycott of Blackpool, thanks to its massive seat price increase, far beyond ordinary folks’ income. Now all Blackpool offers is an overplayed showbiz mafia.
