Excellent news that Equity is going to step in to stop this abominable decision by Andrew Lloyd Webber (News, March 23, page 2) to cast amateurs in a reality TV show. He of all people should know how hard it is for actors to find work. Some actors will find it hard to even get an audition for such a show.
To open it up to the public is therefore ludicrous. Equity should definitely do something. However, are they going to do anything about the fact that the RSC is using “local amateurs” in their complete works season? Are their funds, of £13.9 million from ACE and £2.2 million from the public, not enough to pay professionals? Ninety per cent of actors are out of work. What’s the point of actors, spending years (and money) in training, paying a £90 Equity fee a year and a £120 Spotlight fee? You might as well save the time and money and be non-professional. You’d probably have more chance of getting work that way!
