Theatrical suppliers Hawthorns recently supported the Breakin’ Convention International Festival of Hip Hop Dance at Sadler’s Wells Theatre with a charitable loan of nine Clay Paky 1200 Profiles.
The international line-up of dancers was lit by lighting designer Jonathan Samuels, who explained: “The time demands on the lighting designer of Breakin’ Convention are immense and having equipment that can react as quickly as the ideas flow is a big advantage.
“The hip-hop theatre genre is a hybrid of dance, theatre and occasionally rock ‘n’ roll, so having units that can perform well across all of these added significantly to the look of the festival. In a dance context, having a really reliable shuttering and shaping system is essential.
Samuels used nine Alpha 1200s arranged in a grid formation, and was be able to achieve the lighting effect the dancers wanted without compromising the choreography.
